Design Team Inspiration: Fixing the Background & Making It Work

Hello Scrapbookers!!! Crafty Meggy here with a project that didn’t quite go as planned—but turned into something better. Watch here.

Today’s inspiration is all about working through a layout when things don’t go the way you expected. I started this page with a clear idea in mind, using an ink pad to create the background. But by the time I finished, it just didn’t match the vibe of the rest of the layout.

Instead of forcing it, I set it aside and came back to it the next day with fresh eyes.

That’s when I decided to try something different. I added white paste mixed with a yellow distress crayon to soften the background and help blend that bright white into the more off-white tones of the patterned papers.

It’s not perfect—but it works so much better, and the overall layout feels more cohesive.

✨ Why This Project Inspires

• Problem-solving: Stepping away can make a big difference
• Layering techniques: Helps adjust and soften backgrounds
• Mixed media fix: A simple addition can change everything
• Creative flexibility: Not every layout has to be perfect

I love how this layout is a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do is walk away and come back later. A small change can completely shift how a project feels.

🎨 Try This Technique

If you ever feel stuck on a layout, don’t be afraid to set it aside and revisit it later. Fresh eyes can make all the difference.

Try adding a layer of paste or mixing in color (like a crayon or ink) to adjust the tone of your background and help everything come together.
