Christmas Canvas Art Party

Hi all!  I am excited to share with you a type of grungy art that I used to make on a regular basis but haven’t done in a few years.  I do use a photo on the canvas and so I thought it would be fun for scrapbookers to learn.  IMG_20190213_200126

I used a picture from Christmas and created this for my ex step mom’s b day.   She has always loved Christmas and my art projects.  I grabbed a bunch of my old metal findings from various companies like Tim Holtz, Prima, and Moments, but you can use anything in your garage or junk drawer.  In my process video I explain other canvases I have made and what I used.

All you have to do is glue down your metal in an eye pleasing way on the canvas.  Make sure a little hangs off here and there.  You can it to look dimensional.  I also added a couple of glass pieces as you can see above.  This tiny bottle worked perfect.  The canvas is about 6 inches square.

After gluing down all of my metal I pulled out my Super Heavy Gesso and painted over all of the metal pieces, leaving the photo and the glass unpainted.

This glass piece is something I made years ago with transfer tape and an image that I rubbed on to metal and attached to a flat piece of glass.  It looks so vintage!

Make sure you dry your gesso with a heat gun and get fairly close so it will warp and bubble, making it look aged and textured.   Once completely dry, cover your photo to protect then pull out your favorite water colors or inks and start playing with adding color.  Make sure each color dries thoroughly before adding more color.  If you don’t like the color, gesso over it and start again.  It’s so easy!

I think the dimension is beautiful on a wall.  I have done many of these canvases and no two come out alike.  Some of the large canvases I have made have needed to be made from wood with canvas stretched over and nailed or stapled into place so keep that in mind.

I really like the final product and I hope you do too.  If you would like to see the process of how I made this you can find it on the Crafty Maven Youtube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v-hlWb4O64&feature=youtu.be

Maybe you can make your own canvas and share it in our FB Group.  I would love to see!
