Design Team Inspiration: Handmade Striped Background

Hello Scrapbookers!!! Crafty Meggy here with another beautiful design team project to share with you.

Today’s inspiration is such a creative and colorful mixed media layout featuring a handmade striped background that is full of texture, movement, and personality! Watch the process video HERE.

Our design team member, Kristin, used 5 different Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink pads along with 2 different 49 and Market ink pads to build her striped background. By layering each color in sections, she created a bold but blended foundation that instantly draws your eye across the page.

To add even more fun texture, she used a water spray bottle to create ink splatters across the background. This gave the layout a loose, playful feel and helped soften the edges of the stripes for a more artistic look.

Once the background was complete, she began layering in beautiful embellishments from the kit. She added delicate doilies and fabric pieces to bring in softness and contrast against the bold inked stripes.

To finish the layout, she used a mix of pink-toned flowers, hearts, and other ephemera from the kit. These elements add romance, dimension, and just the right amount of detail to balance out the background.

✨ Why This Project Inspires

• Multiple ink pads: Create depth through layered color
• Distress Oxides & mixed inks: Build bold, blended stripes
• Water splatter technique: Adds movement and texture
• Doilies & fabric: Soften and balance the design
• Floral & heart ephemera: Bring cohesion and focal interest

I love how this layout combines structure and play at the same time. The striped background feels intentional and bold, while the splatters and soft embellishments keep it feeling creative and organic.

🎨 Try This Technique

If you want to recreate this look, choose several coordinating ink colors and build your stripes section by section. Don’t worry about perfect lines—the variation is what makes it interesting.

Once your background is complete, lightly spray water to create splatters and soften the inks.

Then layer in fabric, doilies, florals, and ephemera to build softness and dimension on top of the bold background.
